The Dreaded Musk Thistle

Over three weekends in June, Will and I dug up over 80 cubic feet of thistles, a noxious weed that we have in a few areas of our property. In spite of our effort, I found a few more on my morning walk today.

This evening, I tried to take a photo but I definitely need some practice using the macro mode on my camera and the wind needs to stop blowing (fat chance here on the Dry Side).

Sure is pretty for a weed. Why 'noxious'? kat

Non-native, invasive, not eaten by wildlife nor cattle. Takes over habitat. It's one of many, many noxious weeds. We got a warning postcard two years ago (if we don't take care of the problem, the county will at a cost) so we've been working it each year, trying to do it without herbicides.

We used to have thistles. They looked like that, but may have been a different variety. Goats loved them.

yeah, i get that county postcard for the asian longhorn beetle, which has eaten up many of the beautiful old maples around here. they wanna come on my property and cut down my trees. i figure i can fend'em off for one more year til i'm gone, then let The New People have an ugly yard with no trees.
