Summertime on the Dry Side necessitates constant vigilance and preparation for wildland fires. While the monsoons are welcome for their moisture, the lightning that comes along with the storms is a source of much concern. In preparation for wildland fires, the fire department tries to provide water caches at various locations around the district.
This big tank is being prepared to be moved and filled for a reserve water supply at a remote location.

Gosh, that thing looks HUGE. I bet it will hold a lot of water.
It looks just like a big propane tank - do they bury it or just leave it laying on the ground?
So interesting -- never thought about that -- never heard of this being done around here. How do you get into it -- just a hose, or can a 'regular' person just open it if necessary?
I think this is a 1000 gallon tank. It will be buried underground (although it wouldn't have to be). It'll be placed with the square hole up and sticking out of the ground. One of our guys fabricated a cover with piping so that a pumper truck can attach itself to the tank and suck out the water (or something like that). I think only fire fighters will be able to use it.
