Instead though, while outside I spied an immature Northern Flicker on our fence post (about 20 yards from our front porch). While I was able to capture it with the telephoto lens, I realize I need to use my tripod for such shots.

Some friends of mine decided to do 365 day photographic blogs of their towns (cities, counties, areas, whatever). I thought it sounded fun so I decided to join in. My "365 Days In" features The Dry Side of La Plata County Colorado.

is a flicker a big bird? it looks quite large. i don't think we have those here.
Not huge (like eagles or anything). 11" - 14". They are a type of woodpecker.
We have flickers here - great picture.
Excellent photos! I've never seen this kind of bird before. We have woodpeckers, but they don't look like this.
Wow, great photo. Never heard of flickers before. We have wonderful tons of crows, and some beautiful hawks -- and a woodpecker every so often -- but no flickers.
